Removing the Engine, Installing the engine, Alignment problems, Discover bad stringers and remove the engine again

The engine has to come out for several reasons, It needs to be cleaned, painted, hoses, alternator, senders all repaired or replaced. Also the engine is covering the keel and bilge which needs to be repaired. (See Water in Keel Post)

The hard part was getting the right equipment to remove the engine. The yard I am in does not have a large forklift and the forks will not reach the centerline to hoist the engine. Their boom machine (Giel) seemed too large to fit it and the engine out the door. In the end after several failed attempts, Tim from the yard suggested using the boom itself as the attachment point rather that the winch (too large) Well that worked. Here are the pictures.

This is the boom inside the cabin. The winch will not allow enough clearance so we placed the boom itself above the bilge to hoist the engine.

The 4x4s are to support the engine as it will have to be rested temporarily on the cabin sole in order to get a better grip, closer to the boom in order to fit it our the door.

I used two attachment points. It would have been better to have used 4 points to balance the lift as the engine must be square to the engine mount studs in order to lift off. I found engine mount stud was already broken, one mount itself was cracked and two had to be cut off as we could not get the engine straight enough. Oh well add 4 new mounts to the parts list!

This is a video of the initial engine lift. After getting the engine loose, we lifted it onto boards placed across the cabin sole. the sole was reinforced with 4 4x4s placed under the sole to carry the weight of the engine without damaging the sole.

The engine is lowered onto the boards and the chain fall removed. We chained the engine directly to the boom to reduce the size to get it out the door.

The engine just squeezed through. A few gouges to the teak trim, but fixable.

You can see here how tight to the boom we had to chain the engine.

Finally on the ground!

Time for a powerwash and wire brush to get all the loose paint off

Next primer and a new coat of matching paint. American Diesel advised that Lehman always used Rustoleum Regal Red. The engine runs fine and with only 1500 hours, I see no reason to rebuild it now.

On the way back up!

Now to set  it down and turn forward

OK now the chain hoist to lower into the engine bed.

Down she goes.

Finally in place again. Time reinstall the rebuilt transmission and align them.
